STG Over-the-Road Solutions Launch an Overnight Drop Pool to Save Time and Reduce Costs
The Challenge
A leading global innovator in the household appliance industry faced a sudden operational disruption when its largest asset carrier lost authority at key facilities within the company’s distribution network. As a result, the client was forced to shift from a preloaded drop-trailer model to live loading—adding more than 20 additional loads per day to warehouse operations.
The transition significantly reduced productivity, creating warehouse backups, extended carrier wait times, and increased delivery delays. The client needed an immediate, scalable solution to restore efficiency and protect service levels.
The STG Solution
The client engaged STG Over-the-Road Solutions to quickly design and implement a program that delivered immediate operational relief.
Rapid Trailer Acquisition and Deployment
STG purchased and positioned new 53’ dry van trailers at the client’s facility, rebuilding and expanding the drop pool overnight. The added equipment supported internal workflows and reduced reliance on live loading.
Collaborative Lane and Rate Strategy
STG partnered closely with the client’s transportation leadership to identify the lanes most impacted by the carrier authority loss. Together, the teams established competitive, mutually beneficial rates that ensured a smooth and cost-effective transition to the new operating model.
Carrier Network Expansion
Leveraging its extensive carrier network, STG supplemented the drop pool with carriers willing to provide power-only service and drop equipment on affected lanes. This approach added flexibility, redundancy, and resilience across the network.
A New Operating Model Built for Speed
STG successfully managed a non-traditional trailer pool with short lead times and increased complexity, adapting beyond the conventional drop-and-hook model to maintain uninterrupted operations.
The Results
Improved Service and Productivity
By early Q4, the client reported significant improvements in turn times and labor efficiency at the impacted facility. The transition to live loading was effectively stabilized, and overall warehouse productivity was restored.
Expansion of Services
Following the program’s success, the client engaged STG to provide power-only services at an additional facility. By April of the following year, STG assumed full responsibility for the trailer pool—leasing and operating equipment at the new location.
Strategic Network Growth
STG scaled the solution to manage more than 125 trailers across five distribution centers, demonstrating the strength of the partnership and the client’s confidence in STG’s over-the-road capabilities.
